Earlier this year, the Charleston community lost a beloved and influential figure — Coach Brian Johnson. A devoted husband, father, teacher, and coach, Brian’s impact reached far beyond the classroom and the track.
Throughout his career, Brian was a cornerstone of the Charleston running community. He was a competitive runner for years, then turned his passion for running to coaching. He served as coach for three local college programs and led the Academic Magnet High School boys’ cross country and track and field teams with passion, integrity, and care. His dedication to developing young athletes extended beyond competition, shaping the character and confidence of countless students.
Coach Johnson was known for his unwavering support, positivity, and willingness to help anyone in need. His legacy lives on through the many athletes and colleagues he inspired — a testament to his commitment to excellence and to the people he guided.
As a way to honor Coach Johnson and benefit organizations that were meaningful to him, the Academic Magnet Boys Cross Country team formed a relay to run from Furman University to Charleston Southern University, Brian's alma maters. This year's relay will take place in December and be composed of ten young men who were all coached by Brian Johnson. Among them are his two sons, who ran for Academic Magnet High School and the Mount Pleasant Track Club. Each team member shares a special connection to Coach Johnson, united by the lessons he instilled and the encouragement he so freely gave.
As they take to the roads in this tribute relay, these athletes carry forward not just his coaching, but his enduring spirit — one defined by leadership, kindness, and a love for the sport and community he so deeply cherished.
